It's no surprise that Cornwall's coffee scene is booming.

After all, where better to enjoy a hot brew than in a blustery Cornish cottage, and where better to enjoy a cold brew than on a sunny Cornish beach?

As the co-founder of RISE coffee box subscription, Alice knows her beans: RISE delivers a hand-picked selection of freshly roasted, 100% Arabica speciality coffee around the country every month.

She's chosen four of her favourite south-west roasters at the moment, all of which share our coastal home and a passion for ethically sourced quality.

POTTERBEANS, TRURO

The Roaster

This is one seriously cool coffee brand. Not only because of the way it looks, but because of the story behind the name! At the Potterbeans roastery, coffee is wood roasted and the pottery is handthrown. You can head down to Truro to visit them anytime. The branding is so inviting and at RISE we can’t wait to work with them later this year!

The Coffee

Remagoa is one of the most remote coffee-growing communities in East Timor. There's no road into the village and every bag of cherries has to be carried out by hand or horseback before it even reaches a road.

Before the farmers' partnership with Karst began in 2022, that meant a 2 kilometer hike through forest just to sell to whichever truck came past first, at whatever price was offered. Now, with proper processing and a direct route to market, the farmers get paid fairly for their coffee — and the recognition it deserves.

The coffee itself grows organically in the shade of Ai-Kakeu and Ai-Samtuku trees. Chemical fertilisers aren't used on the island, so the soil is fed the traditional way: chicken manure, cherry skins, and time.

Tasting notes

Cardamom, hazelnut, honey, fig, guava

OLFACTORY, FALMOUTH

The Roaster

Based in Penryn and Falmouth, Olfactory is a roastery that we at RISE have worked with for years! The roastery was born from pure obsession and started in 2010 when a couple fell in love with coffee during university, frustrated by the stale, rubbery cups the industry was serving up.

By 2013, that frustration became Olfactory Coffee Roasters, built on quality, transparency, and ethical trading. The team travels the globe forming genuine relationships with producers they admire, then roasts every coffee with precision on custom Diedrich roasters and ships it fresh daily. The name nods to their old factory home.

The Coffee

This is Olfactory’s signature seasonal espresso blend that combines the delicious Finca Santa Teresa coffee from Mexico alongside the sweet and juicy Fazenda Cruzeiro from Brazil, which Olfactory visited back in 2019. Through combining the subtle acidity and delicate sweetness of this Mexican coffee with the chocolatey and cherry flavours of the Brazilian goodness they achieve the great synergy and flavours that Knockout stands for.

Each bean is delicious as a single origin, but when combined, they bring out the best in each other.

Tasting Notes

Cherry, dark chocolate, honeycomb

ORIGIN, PORTHLEVEN

The Roaster

Everyone in Cornwall must have heard of Origin by now, one of the best roasters in Britain. At RISE we first worked with Origin in 2020, when we had just 50 customers! What makes them so great is the quality and consistency of roasting. Based in Porthleven their roastery is an amazing experience - we visited in 2022 and always tell people to visit if they are in the area!

The Coffee

A naturally processed Brazilian coffee from four women‑led farms, Beija Flor is layered with a sweet, bold character. Shared through a project that centres women’s leadership in coffee, and supports producers across different farm sizes.

Tasting Notes

Chocolatey and bold - worth trying as an espresso

YALLAH, ST IVES

The Roaster

We first tasted Yallah’s coffee from a tiny coffee van in St Ives in 2020. We were on holiday there and after tasting it once, went back to that van many times during that week long trip! Everything about this coffee brand is cool - they are warm, friendly people roasting high quality coffee with an incredible brand.

The Coffee

The Beija Fior house espresso is a classic Brazilian coffee. Moreish and balanced, it is perfect with milk and makes a delicious flat white.

Tasting Notes

Almond, Tangerine and Milk Chocolate.
