Daily Rituals with Emily Scott | Home Comforts
Chef and author Emily Scott talks about the rhythms that shape her life, and how simple moments help her create a sense of home wherever she is.

“There is something overwhelmingly comforting about routine; structure, order, control, a sense of place. The sound of my alarm waking me in the darker mornings of winter, or being woken in the lighter, warmer months by the seagulls crying in the skies.”
Home comforts have always been important to Emily Scott. She splits her time between Bordeaux, the Caribbean Islands and her home in Cornwall, where she finds inspiration from the coast and the changing seasons. No matter where in the world she finds herself, taking the time to make simple moments feel special creates an important anchor in Emily’s day.

“Making that first cup of tea of the day is always the best one in my view. The routine of pulling my favourite jumper over my pyjamas, turning the same lamps on and opening shutters to see a glimpse of the day. I love the beautiful quietness of the beach house as it slowly wakes. Inca wagging her tail from her basket as I whisper good morning.
“Depending on the day ahead, I organise myself and my thoughts. Decide what to wear that makes me feel good. I still always lay the breakfast table as I did when my children were growing up, light candles and enjoy the comfort of Radio 4.”

We visited Emily at her family beach house on Cornwall’s north shore. It’s a calm yet creative space, full of love and joy.
"Every morning, it’s become routine to head over the stile and through the fields to Harlyn Beach. I am getting to know the cliff edges and the ever-changing shapes of the sea. The coastline, as far as the eye can see, is home to jackdaws, fulmars, gulls and pigeons who can be seen nesting on the coast path.
“A sanctuary of beauty and no better way to start my day. At low tide I walk across the beach breathing in the new day, if high I walk above along the narrow cliff path watching Inca run energetically through the grasses always wishing I was as fit as her but knowing that it's the most ridiculous thought.”

We spoke about how rhythm and repetition shape Emily’s creative practice. Her recipes balance comfort and experimentation, simplicity and depth. Each meal is inspired by the experience and energy of the nature surrounding the chef.
“Frost from midnight, starry skies, sunrise, tide on the turn, soft winter light, to the bright shining summer light, soft sea breeze, to the biting winter winds, wrapped up as colder than it looks, all are different but equally beautiful days by the sea. Cornwall. 8am, Noon, 5pm, anytime. Golden sunlight, sunkissed, windswept. Happy anytime. A sense of time. Energy. All the creativity.”
