Knitwear Care Guide

How to keep your favourite knitwear pieces looking their best, season after season.

Cosy, comforting and key to your wardrobe; when you invest in knitwear you expect it to last season after season. At Seasalt, we hand-select quality natural yarns and blends, like traceable organic cotton or responsibly sourced wool, to give each knit the perfect weight, warmth and hand feel.

With the right care, these fibres will last for seasons to come, becoming more loved with every wear. To keep them looking their best wash after wash, we recommend saving this guide and referring back when needed.

How To Wash Your Knitwear

Natural fibres don’t need to be washed as often as synthetic ones. For this reason, we recommend washing your Seasalt knits as little as possible - simply airing them out will often be enough.

When your knitwear does need washing, always:

  • Follow the care label, using cool settings or handwashing where required.
  • Use a specialist wool-wash detergent for any knits containing wool.
  • Turn your garment inside out to minimise bobbling.
  • Roll your knit in a towel to remove excess water. Never wring or twist as this can damage the fibres.
  • Gently re-shape while damp, then dry on a flat surface away from direct heat.
  • Fold your knits to avoid any misshaping caused by hanging.

How To Remove Bobbles

Natural yarns can be prone to bobbling. As you wear your knits, the yarns will rub together which can create little balls of fluff. Use a fabric lint shaver to remove as needed and, in time, knitwear should bobble less.

How To Store Knitwear

If you switch your wardrobe between seasons, it's important to store your knits properly. Stains, sweat and even deodorant residue can damage the fibres of your knitwear, so make sure to wash and completely dry each garment before you pack it away. Folding your knitwear prevents any stretching and misshaping caused by hanging.

How To Prevent Moth Damage

Store your knits with cedar balls, which contain natural oils to repel moths. If you do find moth holes in your knits, try putting them in a sealed plastic bag and leaving in the freezer for two weeks to kill the moth larvae and eggs.
