Knitwear Care Guide

The Seasalt design team share their expert tips for looking after your knitwear.

Our knitwear is made using quality natural yarns and blends that, with the right care, will last a lifetime. To keep them looking their best wash after wash, our knitwear experts share some simple care tips.

HOW TO WASH YOUR KNITWEAR

Natural fibres don’t need to be washed as often as synthetic ones so we recommend washing your Seasalt knits as little as possible - often simply airing them out in a gentle breeze will be enough to freshen them up.

When they do need a wash, follow these steps...

  • Start by checking the garment’s unique washing instructions found on the care label. Always use a cool setting, because warm water can be particularly damaging to wool and mohair fibres. If your garment’s care label says hand wash, skip this section and see the steps below.

  • If your garment contains wool, we recommend using a specialist wool-wash detergent.

  • Turn your garment inside out to help minimise bobbling.

  • After washing, roll your knit in a towel to remove excess water. Never wring or twist your knitwear as this can distort and damage the gentle fibres.

  • Gently re-shape while damp, then dry on a flat surface away from direct heat.

  • When completely dry, fold your knits rather than hanging them to help them keep their shape.

HOW TO HAND WASH YOUR KNITWEAR

Many natural fibre or wool jumpers require a gentle hand wash. When hand washing your knits, follow the steps below.

  • Fill your sink (or a large container) with cold water and add a small amount of mild laundry detergent.

  • Turn your knit inside out and submerge it in the water. Gently swirl your knit around, being careful not the stretch the fabric or catch the fibres.

  • Leave your knit to soak for 5-10 minutes.

  • Pour away the soapy water and refill with clean water. Gently swirl your knit around again and repeat until you have rinsed away all the soap.

  • Drain the water and roll your knit in a towel to remove excess water. Do not wring or twist your knit as the wet fibres will be very delicate.

  • Gently re-shape while damp, then dry on a flat surface away from direct heat.

  • When completely dry, fold your knits rather than hanging them to help them keep their shape.

HOW TO REMOVE BOBBLES

Some degree of bobbling is to be expected with natural yarn jumpers. As you wear your knits, the yarns can rub which creates little balls of fluff. Use a fabric lint shaver to gently remove bobbles as needed. Once you’ve removed the bobbles a few times, you should find your knitwear bobbles less.

HOW TO AVOID MOTH HOLES

To minimise the risk of moth holes in your favourite jumpers, store them with cedar balls which contain natural oils that kill moth larvae. If you find moth holes in your knitwear, put it in a sealable plastic bag then pop it in the freezer for two weeks to kill the moth eggs. You can also use our decorative darning tutorial to remedy the damage.

HOW TO STORE KNITWEAR FOR THE SEASON

Stains, sweat or deodorant residue can damage the fibres of your knitwear. Make sure to wash and completely dry your knitwear before you pack it away, as even a little damp can cause mould to grow.

Folding your knitwear prevents any stretching and misshaping caused by hanging. To fold your knitwear, start by laying it face down on a flat surface. First fold the sleeves in, then fold both sides in to meet in the middle, creating a long rectangle. Fold the bottom third of the knit up, then fold the top third down on top of this to create a neat square.
