Moving with the Tide | Meet Freediver Fiona Curtis

Fiona Curtis is a freediver and fisherwoman from Helston, Cornwall. We caught up while shooting the launch of our new Sea Drift coat.

The Sea Drift Coat worn by Fiona Curtis, a freediver and fisherwoman from Helston, Cornwall.

Our new Sea Drift coat is a design over 40 years in the making. A modern raincoat shaped by Cornwall’s coastal communities and the original fisherman’s mac that inspired our brand.

To honour its heritage, we invited freediver and fisherwoman, Fiona Curtis, to model the coat out in the elements. While on shoot, we caught up to find out what it means to be a modern fisherwoman and forge a career in partnership with the sea.

"After living abroad, Cornwall beckoned me home (like it does for a lot of us). Over the last few years, you'll have found me here; underwater, fishing in our seas, either to provide food for friends and family, supply our feast nights, or to sell to local restaurants. Our mission is always the same – to share delicious seafood, sustainably caught and cooked with love, with the people around us.

With every trip we learn, becoming more in awe and in tune with our incredible ocean.

"Freediving and hand-catching is always an adventure. It takes time to learn the tides, winds, seasons, good spots – and the not-so-good spots. We take time to consider what we harvest and how: resting spots to ensure populations stay healthy, and using minimal gear, including handmade wooden and terracotta pots to catch lobster and octopus.

"We want to reconnect people in Cornwall with Cornish seafood and the seasons. Our ocean is changing but it is an incredible source of food if we tread carefully and treat it with respect."
