The Sea Drift Coat
A high-performance waterproof over 40 years in the making. We take a closer look at the story behind our new Sea Drift Raincoat.

A coat over 40 years in the making and a story that shaped the fabric of our brand. The Sea Drift is a modernised evolution of one of our early rainwear pieces: The Seafolly. An iconic archive design inspired by the heritage fisherman’s mac that started it all.
As is so often the case in Cornwall, Seasalt’s story starts with an unexpected downpour. On a wet day in 1981, the Chadwick family took shelter in a small Penzance shop that sold fishermen’s rainwear to local seafarers. The coats were highly technical; designed for function over form. Made with waterproof materials, practical details and bright colours to keep sailors safe at sea.

The Chadwick family bought a coat, then the shop, and then had the idea: to design clothing inspired by Cornwall, including waterproof coats with the same technical details and vibrancy as that first raincoat.
This was the origin of our bestselling Seafolly Coat – a yellow hooded zip-through waterproof with iconic toggles and a contrast jersey hood lining which we launched 10 years ago. This year, we're revisited the details that made the Seafolly so special to create the new Sea Drift Coat.

Made with our tactile 55% linen and 45% organic cotton blend Tin Cloth®, the Sea Drift was designed with a generous fit for all-season layering. It features the same iconic wooden toggles, oversized collar and peaked hood as traditional fisherman’s macs but has been updated with our high-performance PFC-free waterproof coating.
The dipped back hem provides additional coverage from the rain, with a carefully engineered vent to increase breathability and allow for a full range of movement. The design takes the best features of tried and tested heritage styles and blends them with modern rainwear technology.

Today, our raincoats have come a long way. They're loved across the world for their ease, practicality, clean lines. And, because they're made with responsibly sourced fibres and without the use of environmentally harmful perfluorinated chemicals, no matter how far they go, they'll always be made for the wild, changeable Cornish weather we know so well.
